Is it Tuesday already? The recent dry spell for DVDs appears to be moistening up over the next few weeks. Today’s notable releases include a show which I have been anticipating for a long time…
For those of you not familiar with Sealab 2021, it is one of the most genuinely funny shows I have seen in a long while. It airs on Adult Swim, the adult-oriented block of shows on Cartoon Network. You can catch Sealab 2021 on Sunday nights, and occasionally on Saturdays. But during the rest of the week, you can watch the new DVD set!
Sealab 2021 is a parody of Sealab 2020, which is considered by the head of Cartoon Network to be the worst cartoon ever created. What they do is take all of the artwork and characters from the original show, dub in new voices, and use it to create entirely new episodes with a slightly more humorous twist. In the original show, Marco (the token Hispanic character) was voiced by a guy who sounded painfully white; in the new show, he is voiced by Erik Estrada, because he was the first person the show’s creators thought of when trying to come up with a Hispanic voice. Dr. Quinn is black and has a Ph.D., but Stormy thinks that it’s a nickname, like Dr. Dre. As for Black Debbie and White Debbie…well, you just have to see the episode. Pick it up at Best Buy for only $24.99.
Aqua Teen Hunger Force is another Adult Swim show, except this one is an original story idea. As the website says, they’re not teens, there is no water, and the whole Hunger Force thing is probably misleading too. Watch it and enjoy the adventures of Frylock, Meatwad and Master Shake as they sit around and do stuff. If you’re never seen the show, you should check it out.
Finally, Starsky & Hutch is out this week. This is another one that I wanted to see in the theatres, but never got a chance. But for $15.99, you really can’t go wrong. Enjoy Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson, together again, and Snoop Dogg in his Academy-Award–winning role as Huggy Bear.
